What comes out of a Texas paycheck
Texas has no state personal income tax, and Texas cities and counties do not tax wages. The state funds itself mainly through sales and property taxes instead. A Texas paycheck usually has only these taxes withheld:
| Tax | 2026 rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Federal income tax | 10% to 37% | Based on your taxable income, filing status and Form W-4 |
| Social Security | 6.2% | On wages up to $184,500 |
| Medicare | 1.45% | Plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000 |
| Texas state income tax | None | No state or local tax on wages |
Texas unemployment tax is paid by employers, not withheld from workers, and there is no state disability insurance payroll tax. Pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) contributions and health insurance premiums still come out before you are paid.
Texas minimum wage take-home pay
Texas uses the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, and the minimum cash wage for tipped employees is $2.13 an hour, with tips making up the difference. Most jobs in Texas pay more than the minimum, but it sets the floor.
- Full-time at $7.25 (40 hours, 52 weeks)$15,080
- Federal income tax (single, standard deduction)$0
- Social Security + Medicare$1,154
- Take-home pay per year$13,926
At this income, the $16,100 standard deduction leaves no federal taxable income, so only Social Security and Medicare are withheld. Tipped workers can also check the federal No Tax on Tips deduction.
Texas payday and final paycheck rules
The Texas Payday Law, enforced by the Texas Workforce Commission, sets when you must be paid. It applies to most private employers in the state.
| Rule | What Texas law requires |
|---|---|
| How often you are paid | At least twice a month for hourly and other non-exempt workers. Salaried workers who are exempt from overtime can be paid once a month. |
| Payday notice | Your employer must post its paydays where workers can see them. |
| Fired or laid off | Final pay is due within 6 calendar days. |
| You quit | Final pay is due on the next regular payday. |
| Deductions | Anything other than taxes, court orders and legally required items needs your written permission. |
If a paycheck is late or short, you can file a wage claim with the Texas Workforce Commission. You generally have 180 days from the date the wages were due. See the TWC’s final pay guidance for the details.
Where Texas collects instead: sales and property tax
No income tax does not mean no tax. Texas pays for schools and local services mainly through sales tax and local property tax, and both reach your budget even though neither shows up on your paycheck.
| Tax | Rate | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| State sales tax | 6.25% | Cities, counties and transit districts can add up to 2%, so most purchases are taxed at up to 8.25%. |
| Property tax | Set locally | There is no state property tax. School districts, counties and cities each set a rate on your home’s appraised value. |
| School homestead exemption | $140,000 | Raised from $100,000 by Proposition 13, which voters approved in November 2025. It lowers the value your school district can tax on your main home. |
Worked example. Say a single renter earns $60,000 and spends $24,000 a year on purchases subject to sales tax at 8.25%. That is about $1,980 a year in sales tax. In a state with a 5% income tax, the same worker would pay about $3,000 in state income tax, plus that state’s own sales tax. For homeowners the picture depends heavily on the property tax rate where they live, so check your county appraisal district before you compare.

Hours, overtime and deductions change these numbers. Our overtime pay calculator shows what extra hours add.
Texas take-home pay by salary
For a single filer with no 401(k) or other deductions, paid every two weeks in 2026:
| Salary | Federal tax | FICA | Take-home per year | Per biweekly check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $2,620 | $3,060 | $34,320 | $1,320.00 |
| $50,000 | $3,820 | $3,825 | $42,355 | $1,629.04 |
| $60,000 | $5,020 | $4,590 | $50,390 | $1,938.08 |
| $75,000 | $7,670 | $5,738 | $61,592 | $2,368.94 |
| $100,000 | $13,170 | $7,650 | $79,180 | $3,045.38 |
These amounts are the same in every state without a wage income tax. Someone earning $60,000 in a state with a 5% income tax would take home about $3,000 less a year. Compare any state with our main paycheck calculator.
