How to calculate a tip
To calculate a tip, multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal, then add it to the bill:
For example, a 20% tip on a $60 bill is $60 × 0.20 = $12, so the total is $72. Split between two people, each pays $36.
Mental math shortcuts
- 10%: move the decimal point one place left. 10% of $60 is $6.00.
- 20%: double the 10% amount. $6.00 × 2 = $12.00.
- 15%: take 10%, then add half of it. $6.00 + $3.00 = $9.00.
- 25%: divide the bill by 4. $60 ÷ 4 = $15.00.

How much to tip in the U.S.
Tipping is customary in the United States, and many service workers rely on tips as a large part of their pay. These are common guidelines, not rules, and local custom varies:
| Service | Common tip |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill; 20%+ for great service |
| Bartender | $1 to $2 per drink, or 15% to 20% of the tab |
| Food delivery | 10% to 20%, often with a few dollars minimum |
| Hair stylist or barber | 15% to 20% |
| Taxi or rideshare | 15% to 20% |
| Coffee shop or counter service | Optional; many people leave $1 or round up |
Before tipping, check whether the bill already includes a service charge or automatic gratuity, which some restaurants add for larger groups. For movers, hotels, spas, holiday tips and more, see our full guide: How Much to Tip in 2026.
If you earn tips: the “No Tax on Tips” deduction
Tips are taxable income for the workers who receive them. Under a 2025 federal law, workers in occupations that customarily receive tips can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips a year from federal income tax, whether or not they itemize. The deduction phases out above $150,000 of modified adjusted gross income for single filers and $300,000 for joint filers, and married couples must file jointly to claim it. It applies to federal income tax only, so tips are still subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes. See the IRS page What the “No Tax on Tips” deduction means for you for the full rules. Tipped workers paid by the hour can use our hourly to salary calculator to estimate yearly pay.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage. For a 20% tip on $60, that is $60 × 0.20 = $12, so the total is $72. A quick shortcut: move the decimal one place left to get 10% ($6.00), then double it for 20% ($12.00).
What is 20% tip on $60?
A 20% tip on $60 is $12, for a total of $72. An 18% tip would be $10.80 and a 15% tip would be $9.
Should you tip on the amount before or after tax?
Many etiquette guides say to tip on the pre-tax amount, since sales tax is not part of the service. Tipping on the total after tax is also common and adds only a little. Enter the tax amount in the calculator to tip on the pre-tax subtotal.
How much should you tip at a restaurant?
For sit-down restaurant service in the U.S., 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is a common guideline, with 20% or more for excellent service. Check the bill first, because some restaurants add a service charge or automatic gratuity for large groups.
How do you split a bill and tip between people?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. For a $120 bill with a 20% tip split four ways, the total is $144 and each person pays $36. The calculator can round each share up to the next dollar.
